Star Equipment, Ltd is seeking a Rental Manager at our Des Moines  location!

We are a 3rd generation family-owned Iowa company that was founded in 1968. Star Equipment has grown to 80 employees in 4 Iowa locations; Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, Waterloo and Ames. Our equipment ranges from small generators and concrete saws, to skid loaders and forklifts, to concrete pumps and crane trucks. However, this position will be focusing on smaller engine equipment such as generators, concrete saws, power buggies, water pumps, plate compactors, light towers, mixers, and more.


PRIMARY SCOPE

The rental manager will manage a fleet of equipment and employees to service, maintain and deliver the equipment.
 

SECONDARY SCOPE

The rental manager is also tasked with building and grounds maintenance of specific areas, as well as maintain driver files for the Des Moines and Ames locations.
 

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Handle customers' rental needs; in house, on the phone, and during delivery/pick-up.
  • Manage rental fleet inventory and utilization.
  • Hire, train, manage, and terminate employees as needed to operate a profitable safe and efficient department.
  • Coordinate with assistant rental manager/rental coordinator to assure timely delivery to customers.
  • Train customers and staff on safe and proper operation of our equipment.
  • Train yourself and become fluent with the operation and uses of the equipment we sell and rent.
  • Promote all equipment to maintain direct utilization of equipment.
  • Follow policies and procedures adopted by management.
  • Monitor safety checks on rental equipment and vehicle fleet as well.
  • Utilize software to evaluate the market and equipment as needed.
  • Forecast Fleet needs based on reservations and schedules.
  • Recommend and procure additional fleet as directed.
  • Recommend and request additional fleet with justification through lost rentals and utilization.
  • Recommend disposal of non-performing assets.
  • Maintain shop tools and equipment to provide a safe working environment and efficient work.
  • Maintain maintenance program for your branch’s rental equipment.
  • Coordinate maintenance of equipment on long term rent with customer and service.
  • Coordinate maintenance of equipment with service for fleet not on long term rent.
  • Coordinate assembly and pre-delivery of new equipment for the sales department.
  • Coordinate equipment transfers with other branches.
  • Make the primary and rental salesman for the customer aware of equipment out on the site and the customers future needs as needed.
  • Act as a liaison between the customer and the salesman when required.
  • Maintain awareness of new and unique areas to utilize our rental fleet, in addition to areas we may want to expand into.
  • Maintain awareness of customer’s credit standing and follow up on all credit and collection issues.
  • Review rental billings for accuracy.
  • Recommend conversions of rental equipment for preferred customers.
  • Do all paperwork deemed necessary; sales leads, rental agreements, delivery receipts, quotes, call reports, expense reports, itineraries, etc.… 
  • Coordinate physical inventories as needed.
  • Be available for all management needs including special reports, branch travel, and corporate business.
  • Attend networking and training as required including; lettings, meetings, training, mixers etc…
  • Hold biweekly safety meetings with department
  • Field after hours calls taking care of the customer when the store is closed.

 

PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Professional sales skills and time management

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of construction equipment.
  • Field sales experience in a B2B environment.
  • CDL class “A” combined truck and trailer with air brakes. (Or willing to get)
  • Outgoing, persuasive personality.
  • Self-Starter with a passion to make it right.
  • Ability to work required hours; 5 days per week, generally 7am to 5pm.
  • Good computers skills, writing skills, and paperwork skills.
  • Ability to self-train.
  • Ability to physically load and unload equipment as needed.
